The way we use our homes has changed pretty dramatically over the years.  The kitchen has gone from being an off-limits work room devoted to meal preparation to a social center. Bathrooms are no longer purely utilitarian, either. They’re now spa-like spaces to relax or get ready for the day. And bedrooms are no longer just for sleeping. 

More and more homeowners are expecting more from their master suites. Sure, they want them to be comfortable and quiet for sleeping, but a lot of us are using them as a quiet retreat. When the kids have friends over and have taken over the family room or when there’s something on television that simply doesn’t interest you, you sometimes want a place that’s just for you. How can you make your master suite a quiet retreat? 

One great idea is to place a window seat like the one you see pictured here in the master bedroom of one of our Fox Brook at Montgomery homes. It’s a great little niche where you can hide away and read, think, or simply stare out the window and daydream. It doesn’t get much more relaxing than that. 

Another option is to have a small, beautiful desk in your master suite (also shown here). It’s great for those times when you want to journal, or jot a quick card to a friend (yes, people still do that today!). 

And just because you aren’t into watching what the rest of the family is watching on television doesn’t mean you can’t watch something of your own choosing in the privacy of your bedroom. Maybe you’ll want to set up a sitting area like the one pictured here where you can watch your own shows. Or perhaps you’ll want to build your television into the wall or inside a cabinet where it’s only visible when you want to use it. Or you may want to have an entirely separate sitting room for reading or watching TV like the one in our Classic Carney model in Country Classics at Hillsborough.
