The Ultimate Apartment Cleaning Checklist!

Checklists can help ensure that you don’t overlook the little details, whether you’re starting a new project at work or cleaning your apartment. Following a cleaning checklist, like the one below, will keep your apartment fresh, clean and free from clutter!

In Every Room

Gather Cleaning Supplies: Cleaning can be accomplished much more quickly if you have all the supplies you need before you enter a room.
Look Up: Use a long-handled duster to remove cobwebs from ceilings and walls. If you don’t have a duster, wrap an old tee shirt around a broom.
Pick Up: Pick up and put away stray items on furniture and on the floor in preparation for dusting and vacuuming.
Dust First, Vacuum Second: Dust lamps, overhead lights, knickknacks, baseboards, furniture and other items before you break out the vacuum cleaner. When you dust, start at the highest point of the room and work your way down.
Take Out the Trash: Empty trash cans first to avoid knocking them over when you clean.

Living/Dining Room

Remove cushions from upholstered furniture and vacuum crumbs that have fallen between the cushions.
Vacuum the sides and backs of couches and chairs to remove dust and prevent it from being ground into your furniture.
Dust your TV using the cleaning cloth that came with it, or run a feather duster or electrostatic cloth over the screen.
Vacuum your living room carpet or clean your hardwood floor with a cleaner recommended by the manufacturer.
Get rid of dust bunnies by vacuuming behind couches, entertainment stands and bookcases. Move furniture at least every week or two to keep the room from becoming too dusty.
Put photos, knickknacks are other objects back in their usual places once you’ve dusted and vacuumed.
Remove dust and grime from windows and blinds at least once per month.

Kitchen

Remove everything from your countertops, and use an anti-bacterial spray cleaner to clean and disinfect both counters and sinks.
Clean the items that you display on your countertops, such as mixers, knife blocks, coffeemakers and toasters, before putting them back.
Wipe up spills on stovetops and in ovens and microwaves.
Remove crumbs from the floor with a vacuum or broom.
Mop or clean the kitchen floor with products safe for your floor. Detergent diluted in water is effective in keeping tile floors clean, while a dry mop or a wet mop with a small amount of hardwood cleaner is best for hardwood floors.
Clean exterior surfaces of your refrigerator, microwave, wine cooler, dishwasher, trash can and cabinets with a microfiber cloth and a detergent and water solution.

Bathroom

Scrub bathtubs and shower walls with products designed to remove soap scum, or make your own cleaner by combining baking soda and water to form a paste.
Place towels and washcloths in a laundry basket.
Add a fresh hand towel to the towel rack.
Refill soap dispensers and make sure there’s plenty of toilet paper.
Clean the toilet bowl with toilet blow cleaner or bleach.
Use paper towels to clean the toilet seat, lid, handle, base and tank. Dispose of the paper towels immediately to prevent the spread of germs.
Make every surface sparkle by cleaning the exterior of your bathtub and shower stall.
Use stone cleaner or the appropriate product to remove dirt, toothpaste and soap scum from your countertops and sinks.
Remove spots on the mirror with glass cleaner.

Bedroom

Dust and vacuum floors, furniture, photos and artwork.
Move the bed at least every month or two and vacuum underneath to prevent dust from collecting.
Clean nightstands and dressers and find a place for receipts, loose change and other items that end up in your bedroom when you empty your pockets.
Reduce clutter by throwing away trash and putting other items back where they belong.
Slip a new set of sheets on to your bed and drop the dirty sheets into the washer along with the towels from the bathroom.
Divide clothing into two piles: clean and dirty. Drop the dirty laundry into the basket with the sheets and towels.
Hang up clean clothing or place it in dresser drawers.
