Are you equally excited and overwhelmed at the thought of choosing colors and textures for your new home? Creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere that reflects your personality sounds easy, but selecting just the right shades and features for your Central New Jersey home can be a little complicated. Here are a few color and texture trends you may want to consider when you prepare your decorating plan.

Natural Finishes and Earth Tones Take Center Stage

Wood, glass, metals and concrete are expected to become popular choices in 2018. You’ll see the materials everywhere, from decorative wooden bowls to concrete fireplace surrounds to glass vessel sinks in the bathroom.

The emphasis on nature even extends to the color of your walls. This year, expect to see more walls painted with shades found in nature, such as blue, green, brown, orange, purple or burgundy. Although you may not want to cover all four walls with an earth tone, adding these shades to an accent wall will be a popular choice. Paint manufacturer Sherwood Williams expects “Oceanside,” a vibrant blue-green hue to be a big seller, while Behr has high hopes for “In the Moment,” a tranquil spruce shade inspired by nature.

What color is out? Designers are split on gray, with some insisting that it’s here to stay, while others proclaiming the color trend will soon fade away. If you do decide to use gray, softer, lighter shades are recommended.

Although white has been the default color for ceilings for years, it won’t be unusual to see the same color on both the wall and ceiling this year. Some homeowners are even installing wallpaper in bright colors or interesting patterns on the ceiling. Wallpapered ceilings probably won’t become a major trend due to removal difficulties, but can be a good choice for a small room, such as a first-floor powder room.

Appliances and Fixtures Become More Colorful

Appliance finishes aren’t limited to white, stainless steel and matte black anymore. During the past few years, manufacturers have introduced appliances in bright blues, reds, greens and other vibrant colors. In 2018, expect appliance colors to becomes more muted and subtle. Pastels will dominate, as soft shades of lilac, yellow, baby blue or pink covers dishwashers, ranges, refrigerators and blenders.

Fixtures and faucets have become more colorful too. Whether you want a little contrast or prefer that your faucets complement the color of your appliances, you can’t go wrong no matter what choice you make. In fact, one trend involves mixing and matching finishes. It won’t be unusual to see a rose gold faucet paired with a stainless steel sink.

Textures and Designs Add Depth to a Room

Not so long ago, the ideal room offered stark white walls, a few uncomfortable-looking black leather chairs and an abstract painting, at least according to home design magazines and websites. Although minimalist design may never truly be out, it’s being gradually replaced by rooms that use textures and textiles to add color, depth and warmth.

Wood panels, stone and brick increase the character in any room and practically beg to be touched. If you’re not quite ready to commit to such a permanent change, consider adding texture with three-dimensional wallboards and tiles. Unlike stone walls, it’s much easier to remove wallboards and tiles if you eventually want to try a new style.

Your home furnishing and accent choices can also add texture to a room. Plush velvet couches practically beg to be touched, while colorful woven throws and pillows dripping with fringe provide an antidote to monochromatic minimalist style. Are you in the market for a new dresser or sideboard? The latest styles feature intricate patterns and colorful designs that ensure that your new purchase won’t simply blend into the background.
