Is sitting in traffic or enduring delays on NJ Transit trains and buses the highlight of your day? We didn’t think so. Fortunately, there’s no need to waste time on a long commute when Central New Jersey is home to plenty of large and small employers. No matter what your occupation, you’re likely to find the perfect job 30 minutes or less from your home.

Pharmaceutical and Healthcare

Hillsborough is the ideal place to live if you work in the pharmaceutical or healthcare industries. Ortho BioTech Products, Johnson & Johnson, Ortho-McNeil, Catalent Pharma Solutions, Nestle Health Science, Bristol-Myers Squibb, MediGuard, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Sanofi and Bausch and Lomb all have offices or headquarters in Central New Jersey. Although research, production and laboratory employees are always in demand at pharmaceutical businesses, the companies need to fill a variety of positions, including those in marketing, product management, quality assurance, accounting, engineering and distribution.

Hospitals and healthcare facilities employ thousands of people in our area. Whether you’re a physician, nurse, ultrasound technician, pharmacist, physical therapist or administrator, you’ll find career opportunities available at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Hunterdon Medical Center, Princeton Medical Center, East Mountain Hospital and St. Peter’s University Hospital.

Education

Schools, colleges and universities also provide ample employment opportunities without long commutes. Depending on where you live in Central New Jersey, you may only spend a few minutes on local roads before pulling into the parking lot at Hillsborough Township, Montgomery Township, Bridgewater-Raritan or Somerset Hills Regional School Districts.

Closer to Princeton, you’ll find plenty of private schools that need faculty and staff members, including The Hun School, Chapin School, Waldorf School, Princeton Montessori School, Princeton Day School, Princeton Friends School and Stuart Country Day School.

Princeton University and Rutgers University – New Brunswick are major educational employers. Rutgers has 8,500 full- and part-time faculty and 14,000 full- and part-time staff members, while Princeton employs close to 7,000 employees who receive benefits. Other options include Rider University, the State College of New Jersey, Raritan Valley Community College, and a variety of other smaller educational institutions.

Other Companies

Pharmaceutical companies aren’t the only large businesses that have chosen to open shop in the middle part of the state. Thanks to the abundance of highly skilled and educated employees, the area has attracted many other employers, including:

  • Heartland Payment Systems
  • Covance
  • Citigroup
  • McGraw Hill
  • Bloomberg LP
  • Brother International Group
  • Verizon Business
  • Avaya
  • iconectiv
  • PIM Brands

You’ll find plenty of insurance jobs too, whether you’re interested in working as a claims supervisor or the senior vice president of marketing. Among the insurance companies that call Central Jersey home are MetLife, Chubb Insurance Company, Everest Re Group and Federal Insurance.

Small Employers

Large companies attract all the attention, but it’s often the smaller companies that are the backbone of the communities they serve. Stores, salons, restaurants, businesses and entertainment venues in Hillsborough, Bridgewater and Montgomery Townships fulfill an important need, and of course, they require people to staff and manage them.

Have you always wanted to open your own business? Hillsborough and Central New Jersey are the ideal places to start a restaurant, store, marketing agency, law firm, construction business, tax preparation service, or medical or dental office. You’ll have no shortage of clients or customers, thanks to the more than 330,000 people who live in Somerset County.

Hillsborough Township supports its businesses with Shop Hillsborough, a shopping rewards program that offers a property tax credit or rebate check when residents (or people who work in the Township) do business with local merchants. Thanks to the program, Hillsborough residents have a strong incentive to spend their dollars locally.
