What are 10 of the Best Summer Getaways in New Jersey?

If you’re looking for the best weekend getaways in NJ, you’ll want to have a look at the hidden – and not-so-hidden – gems we’ve put together below.

Our team has leveraged our experience of living and building in New Jersey to share the best summer getaways in the State that we think you’ll love. And who knows, you might even want to call New Jersey home, and then you’ll get to enjoy these New Jersey summer attractions year-round.

1. Asbury Park

Famous for its vibrant music scene and rich artistic culture, Asbury Park is a lively destination for a New Jersey vacation. You can stay at The Asbury Hotel and soak in everything Asbury Park has to offer. You can also stroll along the lively Asbury Park boardwalk, featuring shops, restaurants, and arcades.

And if you’re in the mood for music, why not also attend a live concert at The Stone Pony to see where Bruce Springsteen started his career? Speaking of vintage – yes, we’re referring to Mr. Springston – make sure you plan a visit to the Silverball Museum Arcade to play classic pinball and arcade games.

2. The Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa

Atlantic City is the ideal getaway destination for those seeking upscale accommodations, breathtaking views, and an abundance of entertainment and shopping options. One such stunning location is the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa.

The Borgata's suites set the hotel apart, making it the perfect retreat for your New Jersey vacation. The 1,000-square-foot Opus Suite features floor-to-ceiling windows, a signature custom bed, and a deep soaking bath and shower for two, ideal for relaxing after a day of enjoying the top summer activities in New Jersey.

Amenities at the Borgata include five indoor and outdoor pools, five boutique shopping experiences, and five signature restaurants. These features make the Borgata a standout if you're looking for a restful resort in New Jersey this summer.

3. Cape May

Cape May, America's oldest seaside resort, embodies historic elegance and laid-back beach vibes. Its Victorian architecture, pristine beaches, which are among the best in New Jersey, and quaint shopping districts make it an ideal choice for a summer vacation.

Whether you need a beach day on sandy beaches with crystal-clear waters or wandering through the open-air Washington Street mall, there is something at Cape May for you. And don't forget to climb the 199 steps to the top of the historic Cape May Lighthouse for a bird's eye view of the Atlantic Ocean.

4. The Catskills

A delightful visit to the Catskills is in order if you want to escape New Jersey without traveling too far. We often recommend the charming town of Tannersville, NY, as one of the best places to visit, known for its scenic beauty and proximity to numerous outdoor activities. In our books,
Tannersville offers a blend of relaxation and adventure.

While there, you can stay at the Deer Mountain Inn, a classic turn-of-the-century inn deep in the Great Northern Catskills. This inn offers a rustic, upstate dining experience, along with ten stunning rooms set on 168 acres of wooded land, providing beautiful views and an enchanting environment to relax and recharge.

4. The Delaware Water Gap

The Delaware Water Gap is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering picturesque landscapes and thrilling summer activities for New Jersey residents who prefer to stay close to home. Hike or bike part of the Appalachian Trail to say you did it, or visit other trails. There’s no shortage of them, and many claim them to be some of the best New Jersey hiking trails one can do.

If you're interested in water-based sports, consider kayaking, canoeing, or tubing along the Delaware River. If you need a view, Bushkill Falls is a series of stunning waterfalls just a short drive from the Gap, often dubbed the "Niagara of Pennsylvania" due to their beauty and power.
Then there is the Stroudsmoore Country Inn, which is one of the best New Jersey summer vacation spots to stay if you're looking for a charming resort that takes you back in time.

5. Island Beach State Park

This barrier island stretches 10 miles and is one of the few remaining undeveloped shorelines in New Jersey. At Island Beach State Park, you can swim in designated areas or surf in special zones.

If you want to tap into your bird-watching side, you can spot ospreys, peregrine falcons, and other native wildlife. We also encourage you to explore the Sedge Islands Marine Conservation Zone via kayak or paddleboard for a bit of adventure.

Unfortunately, camping is not permitted at Island Beach State Park, but it's a fantastic day trip option!

6. Lambertville, New Jersey: Somewhere to Visit

Located along the Delaware River, Lambertville, New Jersey, has everything you need for a summer weekend. As one of the best cheap weekend getaways in NJ, you can explore charming boutiques, antique shops, and riverside restaurants for a cultured night out without spending too much.

You can also go tubing, kayaking, or take a scenic boat ride along the Delaware River. Additionally, if you enjoy the fine arts, consider exploring local art or attending a show at the Bucks County Playhouse. However, to truly make it a getaway, stay at the luxurious Lambertville House.

7. Six Flags Great Adventure and Safari

If you need a quick day trip or a one or two-night hotel and pool adventure, consider heading out to Six Flags. One of the largest theme parks in the world, Six Flags Great Adventure offers exhilarating rides and a safari adventure.

When visiting, you can ride the world's tallest coaster, Kingda Ka, or experience the New Jersey Devil Coaster. If you're looking for more adventure, see over 1,200 animals in this drive-through wildlife preserve safari off-road adventure.

8. Wildwood

Why not stay at the ICONA Diamond Beach and experience Wildwood? Wildwood is synonymous with thrilling amusement rides, classic boardwalk games, and wide, free beaches. It's one of the top destinations for those seeking fun activities to enjoy with family and friends in New Jersey.

We recommend checking out Morey's Piers and its beachfront water parks, featuring over 100 rides and attractions. But if you’re not much of a thrill-seeker, you can stroll along the iconic Wildwood Boardwalk for sightseeing and treats.

Additionally, if you're feeling like a bit of history, you can also drop into the Doo Wop Experience Museum and discover Wildwood's retro architecture and 1950s pop culture.

9. Princeton, New Jersey

Home to the prestigious Ivy League university, Princeton is more than just a college town; it's a serene and culturally rich destination.

When you visit Princeton, which is one of the best small towns in NJ for summer vacationing, you can stroll through Princeton University’s picturesque campus, then stop at the Princeton University Art Museum (admission is free!). Afterward, you can wander Nassau Street, which is packed with unique shops, cafés, and ice cream parlors perfect for a sunny afternoon.

Then, if you’re a nature lover, rent a kayak or paddleboat at Mercer County Park or take a quiet walk through the Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park. To complete your stay, book a room at
The Peacock Inn is a charming boutique hotel with elevated dining and historic elegance tucked right in the heart of town.

10. Long Beach Island (LBI)

Long Beach Island is one of the best free beaches in New Jersey. Long Beach Island, or LBI, offers everything you’d want in a relaxing beach escape: soft white sand, calm waters, great restaurants, and laid-back vibes.

This 18-mile barrier island off the Jersey Shore is a favorite for families and couples alike. While vacationing, you can spend your days on the beach, visit the Barnegat Lighthouse (also known as “Old Barney”), or rent bikes to explore the island’s small towns like Beach Haven and Surf City.

Then, if you’re craving a scenic sunset and fresh seafood, you can dine bayside at the Black Whale Bar & Fish House. But don't forget about sleeping arrangements. For accommodations, consider Hotel LBI, which offers rooftop views, beach access, and a saltwater pool that will have you lingering longer than planned.
