Guests often find themselves relegated to the foldout couch in a home office or crammed in bunk beds in the kids' room. Not surprisingly, it’s hard to get a good night’s rest if the sleeping conditions are less than optimal. When you create a luxurious guest suite in your New Jersey home, you’ll win the undying gratitude of your friends and family members. Take a look at a few tips that will help you furnish your guest suite in style.

Start with Comfortable Bedding

It doesn’t matter how beautiful your guest suite looks if the bed is uncomfortable. Take your cue from Goldilocks when shopping for a new mattress and box spring. Choose a mattress that’s not too hard and not too soft. The mattress you select should offer support for any sleeping position without sacrificing comfort.

If you plan to use an existing mattress and box spring, considering adding a memory foam topper or featherbed topper to add extra cushioning. Choose sheets, comforters, quilts or bedspreads that not only complement the color scheme, but feel soft against your skin. Higher thread counts tend to be softer, but the easiest way to tell if the sheets will be soft enough is simply by running your hand over the sample in the store.

Lumpy or unsupportive pillow can keep your guests up at night. Unfortunately, pillows can quickly become flat with regular use. For your guests’ comfort, replace the pillows on a regular schedule.  If you have frequent visitors, consider buying new pillows every six months.

Choose a Color Palette

Before you buy one set of sheets, decide on the color palette for your guest suite. Once you’ve selected a color scheme, it’s much easier to ensure that sheets, comforters, window treatments and towels complement the colors you’ve chosen. Cooler colors are generally recommended for bedrooms because they tend to promote sleep. Houzz recommends lavender, soft gray, icy blue, soft neutral green or dark gray-blue for a calming effect.

Create a Seating and Refreshment Area

Guests will appreciate a place to sit, particularly if they’ll be spending more than a night with you. Place one or two comfortable chairs and a small side table in front of a window or in a corner. If you have enough space, consider adding a beverage maker and a small refrigerator to hold drinks, cheese, fresh fruit and other snacks. If your guests are early risers, they can make themselves a cup of coffee or tea in the morning without even leaving the suite.

Add a Few High-Tech Touches

These days, nearly everyone owns at least one digital device. Make it easy for your guests to stay connected by placing a card with your WiFi password in your guest suite. The addition of a small desk or table and a comfortable desk chair will make catching up on emails or doing a little work easier for guests who bring laptops.

Although spending time together may be the point of the visit, your guests will probably enjoy the opportunity to watch a little TV in their room. Flat screens take up so little room these days and can be added to the top of a dresser or attached to a wall. If your lights, blinds or television are controlled by voice commands, be sure to leave operating instructions in the room.

Don’t Forget About the Bathroom

Your guest suite won’t feel quite as comfortable as you intended if the luxury ends at the bathroom door. Soft, oversize towels in colors in white or complementary colors make getting out of the shower on a cold winter morning a much more pleasant experience. When you add a few comfortable robes to the room, your friends and family members feel right at home.

Think “upscale hotel” not “the sample section at the drugstore” when stocking the bathroom with toiletries. Splurging on better brands will help you create an indulgent experience for your guests. Don’t forget to include a few items guests tend to forget, such as combs, toothbrushes and dental floss.
