What's Driving Montgomery Township's Restaurant Boom?

Most of the activity traces back to one project. Montgomery Promenade is a 292,700-square-foot shopping center going up on Route 206 in Skillman, built on a 54-acre site that had been undeveloped for more than 15 years before construction finally began. Whole Foods Market anchors the development and is set to open a Montgomery Township location on August 21, with the rest of the center following through the fall. The multi-purpose site provides convenience for those nearby who can save money on commuting to larger hubs for dining and shopping. 

Belle Mead has its own smaller wave happening at the same time, with a couple of new kitchens taking over space in Montgomery Place along Route 206. Between the two, renters and residents across the township have considerably more choice than they had even a year ago.

New Restaurants at Montgomery Promenade in Skillman

Whole Foods Market leads the way for grab-and-go, with a hot bar, pizza, and made-to-order sandwiches and salads available to eat in or take home starting August 21. Angelina Bakery brings Italian bakery staples like bomboloni, wood-fired pizza by the slice, and gelato for those with a sweet tooth. For lighter fare, Toastique offers gourmet avocado toasts, acai and smoothie bowls, cold-pressed juice, and coffee. 

For something more distinctive, Iron Whale brings seafood and steakhouse cuts from Executive Chef Charles Collins, along with a taco bar and a full cocktail menu, courtesy of the McLoone Restaurant Group, the same team behind the original Iron Whale on the Asbury Park boardwalk. Next door, The Robinson Ale House covers the beer-and-a-burger crowd with a menu that also stretches to vegetable risotto, NY strip au poivre, and crab cakes.

Turning Point Restaurant takes the breakfast and lunch shift, open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. with dishes like Lobsta-Cado Toast and Lobster Benedict. More Than Q brings Texas-style barbecue, smoked meats, and Southern sides from a team with existing locations in Princeton and Lambertville. Meximodo Cocina & Tequila Bar joins the lineup with a tequila and mezcal selection that holds a Guinness World Record, more than 1,000 bottles deep, alongside a full Mexican menu. Konaseema Biriyani & Dosa rounds out the center with South Indian biriyani and dosa specialties.

New Flavors in Belle Mead

Belle Mead's changes are smaller in scale but just as noticeable day to day. Shanghai Dumplings has taken over space in Montgomery Place, bringing noodle dishes, dim sum, and hand-folded dumplings from a family that already runs locations in North Brunswick and Edison.

If you're craving more international fare, there's Srirangam Veg Restaurant, which opened this spring in the space that used to house Mango Tree, serving South Indian vegetarian staples like dosas, idlis, vadas, and filter coffee.

What About Restaurants in Rocky Hill?

Rocky Hill hasn't seen the same wave of new openings, and that comes down to its smaller size more than anything else. The borough covers well under a square mile, and its commercial footprint has stayed close to what it's always been. ONE53 has anchored Rocky Hill's dining scene for years with New American bistro fare, and it remains a regional favorite. If you prefer to venture out and try a new place, Skillman and Belle Mead are both a short drive away.

Montgomery Township's Up-and-Coming Food Scene
